What is body doubling, and why it works

Ankora Guides · 5 min read

There's a strange, reliable trick a lot of people discover by accident: a task you've avoided for a week suddenly gets done in twenty minutes the moment another person is in the room. They aren't helping. They might be doing something else entirely. But their presence flips a switch, and you can finally start. That's body doubling, and it's one of the most effective and least understood tools for getting unstuck.

What body doubling actually is

Body doubling is doing a task in the presence of another person, who acts as an anchor while you work. The double doesn't coach you, supervise you, or do the task with you. They just exist nearby, maybe folding laundry or answering their own email, while you do the thing you couldn't face alone. It works in person, and it works over video with someone you barely interact with. The presence is the point, not the participation.

Why it works (it's not about being watched)

First, the myth: body doubling is not surveillance. It doesn't work because someone is checking on you or grading your output. Most doubles aren't even paying attention. Here's what's actually going on:

The magic ingredient is low stakes. A body double is presence without pressure. That's exactly why it slips past the wall of dread that a demanding, watching authority figure would only make taller.

The forms it can take

How to actually do it

You get far more out of a double with a little structure:

When there's no one to sit with you

The catch with body doubling is availability. The task hits at 9pm, or on a Tuesday when everyone's busy, and the whole thing depends on a person being free at the exact moment you're stuck. Closing that gap, the on-demand version of "someone's here with me," is a big part of why we built Ankora: something that expects you to show up, sits with you through the first few minutes, and asks how it went, whenever the wall appears, not whenever a friend happens to be free.

No one around to work beside?

Ankora gives you the body-double effect on demand. Tell it what you're starting, and it stays with you through it, then checks how it went.
